How to promote a sale without making your brand look like it is desperate for customers

There is a version of sale signage that damages the brand it is meant to help. Fluorescent yellow posters with hand-written prices. Banners that look like they were designed in five minutes. Window graphics that are so busy trying to communicate every offer at once that they communicate nothing clearly. Customers walk past and the impression they form is not that the products are good value — it is that the business is struggling.

Signage that reinforces the brand instead of undermining it

There is another version of sale signage that does the opposite. It uses the brand’s colour palette. It is legible from a distance with a clear headline. It creates a sense of occasion rather than urgency. It makes the sale feel like a considered event rather than a clearance. And it leaves customers with the same impression of the brand as they had before — just with an additional reason to come in now.

It’s all in the execution

The difference between these two versions is almost entirely in the design and the execution of the print. The message can be identical. The offer can be the same. But one version reinforces the brand and one undermines it.

What we produce for sale season

We produce sale and promotional signage for retailers across Berkshire — window graphics (link), A-boards (link), hanging displays, printed banners, floor graphics (link) at the entrance. The brief is always the same: make the offer clear and compelling without making the brand look like it is having a difficult time.

For seasonal promotions — summer clearances, back to school, autumn collections, Black Friday, Christmas — the advance planning makes a significant difference to the quality of the result. The shops that order their promotional graphics with enough time to get the design right are the shops whose windows look like they meant it.
